About this carbon credit project

The project focuses on reducing fugitive methane (CH₄) emissions from the natural gas distribution network operated by the Karnaphuli Gas Distribution Company Limited (KGDCL) in the southeast region of Bangladesh. The gas infrastructure, largely built in the 1960s, suffers from chronic leaks due to normal wear, environmental stress, and a lack of historical investment in modern maintenance. The project implements a comprehensive Leak Detection and Repair (LDAR) program. This involves using advanced technology, such as Hi-Flow Samplers and Gasurveyors, to systematically survey the above-ground network, identify the precise location of leaks, measure their flow rates, and perform durable repairs using modern materials. Environmental Benefits: Climate Change Mitigation: The project directly prevents the release of methane, a greenhouse gas with a warming potential 28 times that of carbon dioxide over a 100-year period, into the atmosphere. For the 2022 monitoring period alone, it prevented 873,809 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent emissions. Resource Conservation: By stopping leaks, the project conserves Bangladesh's finite natural gas resources, allowing the valuable fuel to be used for economic purposes rather than being wasted. Social and Community Benefits: Technology Transfer & Capacity Building: The project introduces advanced LDAR technologies and techniques previously unavailable in the region. It includes comprehensive training for local staff in leak detection, measurement, and modern repair methods. Job Creation: The project has created approximately 21 permanent, skilled jobs for local workers who manage and implement the day-to-day operations of the LDAR program. Improved Safety: Reducing the quantity of flammable gas leaking into the environment inherently improves the safety for local communities and employees.
