Aluminum Recycling - A Solution for CO2 Emission Reduction by AS METAL, Romania project is a state-of-the-art waste handling initiative located in Bucharest, Romania. Developed by AS METAL COM SRL, the project specializes in recycling post-consumer aluminum waste, transforming it into high-quality secondary raw materials ready for re-entry into the industrial circuit. By displacing the highly energy-intensive process of primary aluminum production from bauxite ore, the project significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions. The facility has an output capacity of between 49,000 and 77,500 tons per year, depending on the type of waste processed. Environmental Benefits: The project's core environmental contribution is the reduction of an estimated 56,282 tonnes of CO2e annually. This is achieved by avoiding the emissions associated with primary aluminum production, a process that is approximately 8.4 times more polluting than recycling. The project also promotes a circular economy by diverting substantial amounts of aluminum waste from landfills, helping to address Romania's low national recycling rate and contributing to EU circular economy targets. Furthermore, the facility uses approximately 45% renewable energy in its annual consumption, enhancing its clean energy profile. Social and Community Benefits: The project serves as a model for sustainable development in Eastern Europe, generating significant local and regional benefits. It creates quality employment opportunities, with a total of 64 jobs, and fosters better working conditions. AS METAL demonstrates a strong commitment to gender equality, with women being promoted into managerial roles.
