Housing Decarbonisation in the United Kingdom

The "Housing Decarbonisation in the United Kingdom" project, led by Arctica Partners (now PNZ Carbon Limited), aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by funding and implementing energy efficiency measures in dwellings across the UK. The project targets a range of "project activity instances" (PAIs), which are individual dwellings, through decarbonisation measures such as insulation, air sealing, and improving central heating systems. It operates as a "Grouped Project," allowing for the continuous addition of new dwellings that meet specific eligibility criteria. The project utilizes Verra Methodology VM0008 Version 1.1, "Weatherization of Single Family and Multi-Family Buildings". Environmental Benefits: The core environmental benefit is the reduction of CO2 emissions from decreased fossil fuel and electricity consumption in homes for heating, hot water, and cooking. The UK's housing stock is a significant contributor to national emissions, with a large proportion being old and energy-inefficient. By retrofitting these homes, the project directly addresses this issue, contributing to the UK's net-zero ambitions. For the monitoring period of 01 January 2023 to 31 December 2023, the project achieved 30,756 tCO2e in emission reductions. Social and Community Benefits: The project delivers substantial social and community co-benefits. Improving the thermal efficiency of homes leads to: Reduced Fuel Poverty: Warmer homes require less energy to heat, lowering energy bills for residents, which is critical as many UK households face fuel poverty. Improved Health and Wellbeing: Cold and damp homes are linked to various health problems, including respiratory illnesses and mental health issues. Energy-efficient homes contribute to healthier living environments and increased comfort and wellbeing. The project quantifies this social value using the UK Social Value Bank, reporting £19.2 million in social value delivered during the 2023 monitoring period. Economic Growth and Job Creation: The retrofitting activities stimulate local economies by creating jobs in the construction and energy efficiency sectors, particularly for SMEs. Enhanced Energy Security and Resilience: By reducing overall energy demand, the project contributes to greater energy security.
