Biochar Project-1 by WeAct

This carbon offsetting project, known as "Biochar Project-1 by WeAct," is located in the Sangareddy district of Telangana, India. The project aims to address the issue of agricultural waste, specifically cotton stalks, by converting them into biochar through low-technology pyrolysis methods (earth pits and box kilns). The produced biochar is then applied to soil to improve soil health and sequester carbon.   Environmental Benefits: The project prevents the open burning or decay of cotton stalks, which are common practices in the region and contribute to air pollution. By converting waste biomass into biochar and applying it to the soil, the project helps improve soil structure, water-holding capacity, and nutrient retention, reducing the need for chemical fertilizers. This also helps mitigate climate change by sequestering carbon in a stable form within the soil.   Social and Community Benefits: The project contributes to sustainable development by creating local employment and income-generation opportunities in rural areas, involving people from local communities in setting up and operating the biochar production units. It promotes gender equality by providing economic benefits to both men and women. The reduction in open burning of cotton waste directly benefits the health of communities by reducing smoke and air particulate matter. Additionally, the project provides knowledge transfer and awareness about sustainable waste management and biochar production and utilization.
