The Togo Safe Water project focuses on repairing and rehabilitating non-functioning boreholes to provide clean, safe drinking water to rural communities across Togo. Traditionally, families in these areas purify their water by boiling it over inefficient three-stone fires, which requires burning large amounts of locally sourced firewood. By delivering safe water directly from emission-free hand-powered pumps, the project entirely removes the need for boiling. • Environmental Benefits: The project significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions by avoiding the combustion of wood fuel, which also alleviates pressure on local forests and natural resources. • Social & Community Benefits: Communities experience a reduction in water-borne and stomach-related diseases. Furthermore, it vastly reduces "time poverty"—especially for women and children—by eliminating the hours previously spent walking long distances to collect firewood and unsafe water.
