Bursa-Hamitler Landfill Gas Collection and Energy Utilization Project

The Bursa-Hamitler Landfill Gas Collection and Energy Utilization Project, developed by ITC-KA Enerji Üretim Sanayi ve Ticaret A.Ş., is a large-scale renewable energy initiative located at the Hamitler landfill in the Bursa Province of Türkiye. The primary objective is to capture potent methane gas, a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, released from the decomposition of municipal solid waste and utilize it to generate electricity. Prior to the project's implementation, this landfill gas (LFG) was released directly into the atmosphere. The project involves a comprehensive gas extraction system that feeds the captured LFG to seven gas engines with a total installed capacity of 9.8 MW. The clean electricity generated is then exported to the Turkish national grid, displacing energy produced by predominantly fossil fuel-powered plants. An enclosed flare is also on-site to safely destroy any excess gas, ensuring continuous methane abatement. Environmental Benefits: Climate Action: The project significantly mitigates climate change by capturing and destroying methane (CH₄), a greenhouse gas with a global warming potential 28 times that of carbon dioxide (CO₂). Improved Air Quality: By capturing and combusting the LFG, the project reduces the emission of pollutants, including odor-causing compounds like hydrogen sulfide, leading to better local air quality for surrounding communities. Reduced Safety Risks: The active collection of landfill gas significantly lowers the risk of fires and explosions, which are inherent dangers associated with uncontrolled landfill sites. Social and Community Benefits: Local Employment: The project has created local employment opportunities for the operation and maintenance of the facility, contributing to the region's economic growth. During its last verification, it provided 19 jobs. Knowledge Transfer: It facilitates the transfer of modern waste management principles and renewable energy technology within the host country. Training and Development: The project provides regular training for its staff on technology, plant operations, and health and safety procedures, enhancing local skills.
