Huizhou Landfill Gas Power Generation Phase III and IV Project

The Huizhou Landfill Gas Power Generation Phase III and IV Project is a initiative located at the Huizhou Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) landfill site in Guangdong Province, China. The primary goal of the project is to capture landfill gas (LFG), which is predominantly methane, and use it to generate electricity. This generated electricity is then exported to the China Southern Power Grid (CSPG), displacing electricity that would otherwise be generated by fossil fuel power plants. The project consists of two instances: Phase III with a total installed capacity of 3.5 MW (5 x 700 kW generators) and Phase IV with a total installed capacity of 5.92 MW (16 x 370 kW generators), resulting in a total installed capacity of 9.42 MW.   Environmental Benefits: The project significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions by capturing methane that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere from the landfill. By supplying renewable electricity to the grid, it also reduces emissions from fossil fuel-based power generation. The project is estimated to achieve total GHG emission reductions of 1,911,935 tCO2e over the first 7-year crediting period. The project also contributes to a reduction in odour from the landfill by collecting the LFG.   Social and Community Benefits: The project enhances landfill safety by installing a modern gas extraction system, minimizing the risk of explosions from methane accumulation. It creates temporary jobs during construction and 20 permanent jobs during operation. Local stakeholder consultations indicated strong support for the project, with residents believing it will positively impact the local economy and environment.
