CTL Landfill Gas Project

The CTL Landfill Gas Project, located at the “Central de Tratamento de Resíduos Leste – CTL” landfill in São Paulo, Brazil, is a large-scale initiative designed to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. The project's primary objective is to capture landfill gas (LFG), which is rich in methane (CH₄), a potent greenhouse gas that was previously vented into the atmosphere. The captured gas is then destroyed through two main pathways: combustion in high-efficiency enclosed flares or processing and supplying it to industrial customers through a dedicated pipeline, displacing the use of fossil fuels. Environmental Benefits: The project delivers significant environmental benefits by capturing and destroying methane, which has a much higher global warming potential than carbon dioxide. This process substantially reduces the landfill's contribution to climate change. By supplying LFG to industrial clients, the project provides a cleaner energy source that displaces natural gas, further reducing fossil fuel dependency and associated emissions. The capture system also helps mitigate local environmental issues, such as unpleasant odors associated with landfill operations. Social and Community Benefits: The project is a source of local employment, creating jobs related to construction, ongoing operations, and maintenance. Beyond direct employment, the project developer, EcoUrbis Ambiental S.A., actively engages with the local community through its long-standing environmental education program, “Programa Ver de Perto” (Close Look Program). Since 2008, this initiative has reached over 57,000 students, teachers, and community members, raising awareness about waste management, recycling, and the environmental benefits of capturing greenhouse gases.
