The "Efficient and Clean Cooking for Households in Somalia" project (GS12285) distributes highly efficient charcoal cookstoves, specifically the "Jikokoa" model, to urban and peri-urban households across the Federal Republic of Somalia. In a region where charcoal production drives severe deforestation and land degradation, this project replaces inefficient traditional stoves with modern appliances that reduce charcoal consumption by approximately 50%. Beyond the environmental benefit of preserving Somalia’s scarce woody biomass, the project delivers significant social impact. It reduces indoor air pollution—a major cause of respiratory disease—resulting in 100% of surveyed users reporting improved air quality. The project also generates tangible economic relief for families living below the poverty line by lowering fuel costs, and it promotes gender equality by reducing the time women spend cooking and sourcing fuel.
